Wilting Scales

Wilting Scales is a response to the 2019 Brandeis Festival of the Arts and addresses the ever present threat of climate change and the irrevocable damage that has been done to Earth. Surreal in nature, Wilting Scales confronts the possible and transforms it into something complex and intimately personal through adorning a dark and imminent threat with the beauty of something simple and fleeting. The beauty of a rose is brief, yet is powerful and filled with vitality. Its redolent sweetness and delicate form is something that has been celebrated throughout time; and ironically so; time is what this signifier lacks. It looms over the oceans, threatening total annihilation of marine life and every connected organism that depends upon it for survival. Like the wilting rose, the planet-- as a collective unit, is past its prime and has already begun to wilt. As each petal falls to the underlying pool, more marine life suffers at the hands of stagnant idleness.
